An absolute farce. A disgraceful waste of taxpayers' funds...and this from someone who won their case...If you are thinking this is somehow the Building equivalent of the Consumer Protection people you are sadly mistaken and the frustrating reality is that if you are deterred by the consistent one-star rejections of their 'service' they will be delighted at having less to do.After becoming so absolutely frustrated at being ripped off by incompetent trades I took one of the worst to the Building Commission - a body tasked specifically with oversight of building-related complaints - thinking that in doing so I would avoid the long, drawn-out process of civil litigation. Not so. Not only did it take them over six months to end up coming to a conclusion, they simply ignored key items of evidence provided and exhibited a level of incompetence (such as not being able to follow basic maths, or basic comprehension) so breathtaking it seriously made me question whether they were simply collectively unfit for the task or, perhaps equally disconcertingly, exactly who these people are working for - because I assure you that based on my experience it is very difficult to conclude other than that they work on behalf of the members of the Building industry and seek to bury, obfuscate and ignore evidence like some fake news outfit, selecting only parts of the evidence and drawing conclusions divorced from or in at least one case completely contradicting reality and even their own observations. Having a minor amount of legal experience I was shocked that a governmental body acting in a quasi-judicial capacity could exhibit such a blatant disregard for the rules of evidence and principles of natural justice. Ultimately I suspect this is simply a collection of inexperienced civil servants who lack competence in both building and investigative matters and whom harbour a secret but powerful institutional bias towards the builders and trades they claim to independently investigate. It took eight months of fighting with these people, after months of fighting with the Builder, to drag them kicking and screaming to the point that every tiny technicality they threw up was quashed and every red-herring objection they cooked up was ironed out.Remember - I won" my case through a dogged persistence and with the benefit of some legal experience that meant I could identify and call out their error. I would recommend avoiding dealing with these people altogether and either sue the other party directly or at the very least do as I have done here and warn others about shonky operators with a Google Review

There is no point of having this organisation just wasting TAC PAYERS money. Every single complex building disputes they are just forwarding to SAT.

the worest department in the Australia,,i lodged a complain against a builder who put the slab on my land without buildering approval from the council, first time i lodge the complain the department kept asking for more evidence over the course of 4 months, after 4 months they said i lodge the wrong complain instead of normal complain it should be contract dispute, so i had to lodge another complaint and write contract dispute, and now after 5 months they said there is not much we could do because the builder not answering and they moved my case to the State tribunal,so now i decided to finish building house myself, so lodge i owner builder and its already being 2 months and 6 times i called to check the progress, and now they saying the person in charge of my case is on leave, so if i hadnt called no one would finish my applicationjust bad bad department wast of tax money

Every time I seek advice from Building and Energy, I get a standard response to put through a complaint OR go and seek your own legal advice. I am not sure why the department EXIST. They are meant to be a governing body but instead they are doing absolutely nothing to help consumers (and let the builders do whatever they want!!). Don't call it's a waste of your time.

We have to pay lots of money for licensing and the lazy person didn’t want to give me the form , keep asking me to print on my own from website while I drove long distance there to finalised my registration

Ordered a re-print of my Plumbing contractors license over 3 weeks ago. I had no contact or word from the department that they had never processed it as they were waiting further details regarding payment. I had already made payment and provided a tax invoice receipt. Now having to wait more weeks on end for my ticket. The utter incompetence of this department never ceases to amaze me.

Can't find a reason to give any less than 5 stars. I spoke to a building surveyor about the Australian Building Codes and the requirement for a firewall in my shed. The requirement was very quickly and correctly squashed and reasoning explained. Very satisfied.

Toothless tiger. 2 building orders and builder ignored both of them. Building commission powerless to do anything to the builder. Builder still trading and licensed despite ignoring the building commission throughout the complaints process. They really need to have tougher laws and treat building licenses like drivers licenses.Maybe large fines and imprisonment would clean up the industry but we have very weak enforcement.Builder reg9459
